Rare chart of the English Channel by Doncker
Description
This 1661 sea chart by Hendrick Doncker focusses on the English Channel, taking in the adjacent coastlines of southern England and northern France. It reaches from southeastern Ireland, southern Wales, and Essex in the north to Brittany and Normandie in the south.
Similar to portolans, geographical detail in Doncker’s chart is concentrated along the coastlines, with countless locations named. In England and Wales, Swansea (Swansey), Cardiff (Cardief), Newport (Neuport), Bristol, Plymouth (Pleimuyen), Exeter (Excester), Portsmouth (Porsmuyen), Dover (Doeveren), and London are easily identifiable, to name but a few. Notable French settlements include Brest, Le Havre (Hable neuf), and Calais (Cales). The Channel Islands appear as Ornay (Alderney), Garnzee (Guernsey), Arem (Herm), Sarck (Sark), and Iarzee (Jersey).
Navigational elements include rhumb lines, soundings, an indication of shoals and submerged hazards, and anchorages.
The chart features two compass roses (one partially shown), and it is adorned with the coats of arms of England and France.
A decorative title cartouche is displayed at lower right, with another cartouche beneath it holding three distance scales.
A beautiful example of this scarce Dutch sea chart.
