Lucien BOUCHER ("Monsieur Planisphere")

Lucien Boucher was a French graphic designer, illustrator, and poster artist who was born in Chartres on December 26, 1889, and died in Paris on February 6, 1971. Not much is known about his family background. He received his formal artistic training at the Sèvres Ceramic School (École de céramiques de Sèvres). Following his graduation, he began his professional career as a caricaturist and cartoonist for humorous and satirical French publications, notably Le Rire and Fantasio, before transitioning primarily into commercial advertising, cinema poster design, and surrealist-inspired lithography during the 1920s.

Boucher's significance lies in his pioneering work within 20^th-century commercial pictorial cartography. Rather than focusing on scientific surveying or traditional engineering, Boucher applied his background in Art Deco and Surrealism to the creation of highly stylised, imaginative world maps and planispheres designed specifically to promote the golden age of aviation. Between 1933 and 1962, he served as a principal designer for the national airline Air France, a prolific collaboration that earned him the moniker "Monsieur Planisphere". His maps successfully blended corporate advertising with historical cartographic aesthetics, frequently superimposing accurate, white airline route networks over dark, vividly coloured continents and oceans populated by mythical sea monsters, sailing ships, regional wildlife, and cultural vignettes. Key publications by Boucher include his extensive series of world route maps for the airline, such as the Air France Réseau Aérien Mondial (first designed in 1935 and updated in various postwar editions, including 1947, 1948, and 1959), his celestial-themed Air France by Night and Day in All the Skies (1938), and a vibrant pictorial map of Paris (1949).

Lucien Boucher will be remembered as a master of mid-century pictorial cartography who successfully transformed commercial airline flight paths into captivating, artistic expressions of global travel and imagination.
