A beautiful early view of Sydney’s North Harbour
Description
This view originated as a drawing by the Anglo-Swiss artist and colonial engraver Frederick Casemero Terry. It was engraved in England and published in Sydney in 1855 by Sands and Kenny as part of the rare plate series titled Landscape scenery, illustrating Sydney, Paramatta [sic], Richmond, Maitland, Windsor and Port Jackson, New South Wales. Due to a notable contemporary production error, the engraver misspelled the artist’s surname, causing it to appear on the plates as “Fleury”.
The composition features the North Harbour section of Sydney Harbour, as seen from Vaucluse. Beyond the foreground, which depicts two figures on horses, Watsons Bay, South Head, and North Head are distinctively shown, with the Pacific Ocean to the right. In the distant background, the entry to Middle Harbour can be seen to the left, while the centre takes the view to what are present-day Manly, Queenscliff, and possibly Long Reef.
The print title is positioned directly below the image, at bottom centre of the sheet.
