Rare German edition of 1883 Niagara Falls map
Description
This is the German edition of a map titled “Map of the land proposed to be taken by the commissioners of the state reservation at Niagara for preserving the scenery of the Falls of Niagara”, published by Weed, Parsons & Co. in Albany, New York, in 1883.
The map shows the Niagara River and Niagara Falls, Goat Island and adjacent islands, and the “Village of Niagara Falls”, i.e. the present-day city of Niagara Falls, New York.
The area earmarked for preservation is outlined in red, with the southern and western limits coinciding with the border between Canada and the United States, as indicated through a dashed line.
At the falls, dotted lines demarcate the edge as it appeared in 1842 and 1875, based on surveys.
The map features a decorative north arrow at upper left.
A distance scale is provided at upper right, with a table beneath identifying the total area of land to be taken for the purposes of preservation.
The English edition of the map was prepared to accompany the first “Annual report of the Commissioners of the State Reservation at Niagara”, published by J.B. Lyon, in Albany, New York, in 1883.
An interesting and scarce map from the time Niagara Falls was rising in popularity as a tourist attraction.
